The usual cause of gear grinding when shifting is that the engine is idling too high. Bumping the throttle causes the idle to decrease and allows grind free shifting. I have lowered the idle on my mule to allow shifting but the problem is that the engine doesn't like to idle that slow and usually stalls., Remove that bolt. Start filling the system from the cap under the seat. Have a drain pan under the front radiator to catch the fluid that is GOING to leak out-and also to catch the coolant that will be lost from the manifold bleeder (especially if doing it by yourself). Fill the system until coolant runs out of the radiator.
